Group Resists Tunnel Work
Illawarra Mercury
Monday May 25, 1998
Northern suburbs residents today will demand that no work continue on the Scarborough-Wombarra drainage tunnel until a promised construction monitoring committee is convened.
Residents claimed victory on Friday when work stopped on the project after they confronted earth-moving equipment, claiming excavation would destroy the rock platform and headland at Wombarra Beach.
State Rail contractors Transfield and Fluor Daniel agreed to halt work until early this week.
Residents' spokesman Andrew Whiley said yesterday a meeting would be held with contractors at 4pm today, when residents would demand work cease until the promised construction monitoring committee was established and the whole community thoroughly informed about the construction schedule.
"We need to be satisfied that all environmental impact issues ... have been adequately addressed," Mr Whiley said.
