'no Evidence' Gallipoli Bones Disturbed
The Age
Monday March 7, 2005
THE Government is holding talks with Turkish authorities over claims the bones of Australian soldiers have been disturbed by roadworks at Anzac Cove. Australian writer, historian and Gallipoli resident Bill Sellars has said he was reduced to tears by damage from earth-moving equipment at Anzac Cove. A spokesman for Veterans' Affairs Minister De-Anne Kelly said there was no evidence bones had been disturbed. "Turkish authorities have taken great care over many decades to preserve the graves of Australian soldiers in Gallipoli. We're unaware of any bones having been discovered," he said. Australian and Turkish authorities were looking into the matter. "The Office of Australian War Graves and Turkish authorities are holding discussions to progress these issues," he said. Mr Sellars' concerns have been echoed by RSL president Major-General Bill Crews, who called on the Turkish Government to proceed carefully and sensitively with the roadworks.
